How to Play Folksmoot: Classes, Combat, and Rules

Folksmoot’s gameplay system is designed to be approachable, immersive, and safe. You don’t need to memorize a rulebook to participate, but understanding the basics will help you feel confident when the action begins.

Choosing a Class

Participants choose from several broad classes that define their role in the world. These include frontline fighters, healers, crafters, and storytellers. Each class has a simple special ability that reinforces its identity, but no one is locked into a single playstyle.

Classes are meant to encourage teamwork and roleplay, not optimization.

Combat at a Glance

Combat is physical but controlled. Strikes must be deliberate and safe, and certain areas such as the head and groin, are always off-limits. Weapons and shields degrade over time, reinforcing tactical choices and cooperation.

Brawling is allowed in limited, clearly defined ways using non-contact motions and roleplay cues.

Health States and Roleplay

Players move through three main health states:

  • Healthy: You fight and move normally.
  • Wounded: You roleplay injury, fatigue, and stress.
  • Fallen: You are incapacitated and must seek aid.

Some effects may briefly stagger a player, forcing a pause in combat to simulate disorientation.

Safety and Fair Play

Safety calls such as HOLD, CAUTION, and CLARIFY are used throughout the event. These calls override gameplay immediately and must always be respected.

Consent is an active part of Folksmoot. Simple hand gestures allow players to check in or step out of a scene without breaking immersion.

The system relies on honesty and mutual respect. You are responsible for tracking your own hits, trusting others to do the same, and reporting unsafe behavior to a game master if needed.

A Shared Story

Ultimately, Folksmoot is about creating a shared experience. Victory is less important than immersion, cooperation, and the story you build together.
